After meeting NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House, Donald Trump went right back to bashing the alliance, while Rutte described the conversation as "very frank and candid," which is diplomat for "nobody got what they wanted" (BBC News, Apr. 9; Reuters, Apr. 8). The repetition is the story: every public broadside keeps Europe in campaign mode, even when the meeting itself was supposed to calm things down.
